The Different Types of Contact Lens Solutions

6th Jan 2023

To keep them clean and hygienic, contact lenses must be soaked in a disinfecting solution overnight. There are three main types of contact lens solutions: multipurpose, hydrogen peroxide-based, and basic salines.

Multipurpose Lens Solution

Multipurpose contact lens solutions are the most popular and convenient option. These solutions can be used for cleaning, disinfecting, and storing contact lenses. They contain a combination of disinfecting agents and wetting agents to keep the lenses clean and comfortable to wear. One of the main advantages of multipurpose solutions is that they can be used on a variety of lens types, including soft, hard, and gas-permeable lenses.

Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Lens Solution

Hydrogen peroxide-based solutions are another popular choice for contact lens users. These solutions use hydrogen peroxide as the main disinfecting agent and require a neutralizing tablet to convert the hydrogen peroxide into a saline solution. One of the main benefits of hydrogen peroxide-based solutions is that they are extremely effective at killing bacteria and other microorganisms on contact lenses. However, peroxide-based solutions can be more time-consuming to use, as the contact lenses must be soaked for at least six hours and then rinsed with saline before they can be worn.

Basic Saline Solutions

Basic salines are a simple, no-frills option for contact lens users. These solutions contain only salt and water and are used for rinsing and storing contact lenses. They do not contain any disinfecting agents, so they are not suitable for cleaning or disinfecting lenses. However, they can be useful for rinsing lenses after they have been cleaned and disinfected with another solution, or for storing lenses overnight if a more specialized solution is not available.

Each of these solutions has its own benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the contact lens wearer. It is important to follow the instructions for use carefully and to replace the solution regularly to ensure that the lenses remain clean and comfortable to wear.
