Bausch & Lomb is perhaps one of the oldest operating businesses in America today, with roots that go back to 1853. It was a German immigrant who setup a small optical goods shop in modern day Rochester, New York. Bausch borrowed $60 from his old and good friend when he needed to keep the business running, this friend was Henry Lomb. Bausch had promised that he would make Lomb a full partner when his business grew and when it did he made good on his promise.
Early beginnings
In the beginning the company mainly manufactured rubber eyeglass frames as well as an array of optical products which required high precision manufacturing. Later by 1903, the business had applied for patents for Binoculars, microscopes and back then a camera shutter based on mainly the eye's reaction to bright light.
Always innovative
Bausch & Lomb have a proven history of innovation ever since the early 1900s. They have constantly brought innovative new products to the market, with milestones like sunglasses for the military during World War I, along with lenses that were used to take the first satellite pictures of the moon. In 1971, the company introduced the very first soft contact lenses and since that day onwards they have become the largest producer of eye care products.
